How to Write a News Update

A news update article provides current information about a topic, often written in a journalistic style. It delivers both facts and opinions and may contain images or graphics to illustrate the story. A well-written news update is concise, informative, and accurate. It should never use slang or jargon and must be sourced.

Start with a strong headline that captures the attention of readers. This will set the tone for the rest of the article and help you avoid burying important or compelling details in the middle of your piece. Ideally, the headline should answer the five W’s and one H — who, what, when, where, why, and how. The first paragraph, also called the nut graph, should deliver these key points quickly and clearly.

The remainder of the article should expand on the key points introduced in the nut graph. This can include quotes from experts and other sources, more detail about the scene and background of the story, or analysis and insight into why and how the news happened.

As soon as a breaking story breaks, you should display the latest information on your home page. This might be information from the news wires but you should always check and qualify these if necessary. Then you can continue to source more detail, especially from people directly involved or witnesses to the event. Video clips, for example, can convey far more emotion and realism than a written description can.
